Samuel Shannon Blain Sr., 84, of Sweet Springs, died Friday, April 11, 2008, at I-70 Medical Center in Sweet Springs.

Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, April 16, 2008, at First Christian Church in Sweet Springs, with Rev. Susan Smith-Allen and Rev. Randy Shannon officiating. Friends may call after 4 p.m. Tuesday at Campbell-Lewis Funeral Home in Sweet Springs and visitation will follow from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Pallbearers will be Rick Arnold, Bob Bernard, Bob Glenn, Marty Elsea, Eli Lee, Mason Edward Snider, Zane Shannon Snider and Tom Tyler. Honorary pallbearers will be Robert L. Baker, J.C. Forbes, Chester Griffitt, Delbert LaRue, Glen LaRue, James Lindemann, Dallas Parker, Charles Scrivner, Carter Shannon, Raymond Trautman and Charles Worley. Burial with military rites will be held in Fairview Cemetery in Sweet Springs. Memorials may be made to First Christian Church or Sweet Springs High School Athletic Booster Club. Born Oct. 27, 1923, in Chouteau, Okla., he was the son of the late James Albert Blain and Edna Margaret Shannon Blain Bledsoe. He was a 1941 graduate of Sweet Springs High School and attended Kilgore College in Kilgore, Texas, and Oklahoma A&M in Stillwater, Okla. He was a U.S. Navy veteran, serving during World War II. On Jan. 3, 1948, he married Velma Louise Aulgur, who preceded him in death on Jan. 15, 2005. He worked for Phillips Petroleum Company, retired from Explorer Pipeline Company and also worked in the real estate business. He returned to Sweet Springs in 1990, moving from Dallas, Texas, where he had lived since 1967. He was a member of First Christian Church in Sweet Springs, Sweet Springs American Legion Post 279 and Tin Can Sailors Association. He was a lifetime member of VFW in Texas and a charter member of Sweet Springs Revitalization Association.

Survivors include one son, Samuel Shannon Blain Jr. of the home; one daughter, Marsha Lynn Snider of Sweet Springs; six grandchildren; two brothers, Joel C. Bledsoe Jr. and Bobby Earl Bledsoe, both of Tulsa, Okla.; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents and wife, his stepfather, Joel C. Bledsoe Sr., preceded him in death.
