Thomas Bell was a United States Soldier who served during the American Civil War from 1861 to 1865.
He enlisted on August 8th, 1863, at New York City, New York, for three years service, at the age of 18, and was mustered into service as a private in Company D of the 9th New York Veteran Volunteer Infantry Regiment on August 29th, 1863. 9th Veteran Regiment was merged with several other veteran regiments that were organizing in New York City at the time, and the company was assigned as Company H of the 17th New York Veteran Volunteer Infantry Regiment on October 14th, 1863.
He served with the regiment throughout its campaigns in Kentucky, Tennessee, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, South Carolina, and into North Carolina, with the Army of Major General William T. Sherman. He was wounded in action on March 16th, 1865, at the Battle of Averysboro, North Carolina, and was sent to a hospital in New York. As a result of his wounds he was mustered out of service on June 21st, 1865, at David's Island, New York.
