Village Record, West Chester, Chester County, Pa.
February 25, 1853

Very suddenly, on the night of the 8th instant, 1853, at her late residence in the Borough of West Chester, in the 74th year of her age, SARAH HANNUM, relict of John Hannum, dec'd- The deceased had enjoyed, up to the time of her death, remarkably good health. On the evening of her decease, she retired to her bed at the usual hour, manifesting no symptom of disease, having during the day exhibited her usual cheerfulness of disposition. She had retired to her lodging room but a short time, when one of her daughters hearing some noise hastened to her chamber and found her very ill, who immediately said would send for the doctor. Her mother remarked. "there was no use in doing it, she was dying." The physician was brought in haste, but she expired in a few minutes after his arrival. Her disease and sudden attach was said to be congestion of the lungs. The deceased had a large circle of friends and acquaintances by whom she was much esteemed. Her courteous manners and kind, and social disposition secured the good will and regard of all her neighbors- but it was within the sphere of her family that her many maternal virtues out, and were most highly appreciated, where she ever strove to discharge all domestic duties with solicitous and affectionate regard. She lived beyond the period usually allotted to human life; and died as she lived, at peace with God and man; and while her bereaved friends mourn their loss and shed the irrepressible tear of affection and sorrow at her grave, they have the consolation in believing that virtues like hers will receive a happy reward.
