Monroe I. Bender was born near Kalona, the son of Ira D. and Lena Miller Bender. He grew up in the community and married Barbara Coblentz on January 17, 1943. The couple lived and farmed in the area until moving to Washington in 1974. Monroe loved visiting with family and friends and farming was always on his mind. He also did trucking and drove school bus for Mid-Prairie School District. Fishing was a enjoyment in his life.
Monroe moved to Pleasantview Home after his health failed following Barbara's passing in 2005. While he was still living in Washington he attended Lending Hands where he enjoyed all the activties.
Monroe is survived by six children and their spouses: Clara Mae and Webster Rhodes of Nashwauk,MN, Lloyd and Joyce Bender of Kalona, Salinda and Bill Swartzendruber of Bellevue, NE, Donna and Fred Rhodes of Columbiana, OH, Kenneth and Bernice Bender of Washington, and Cletus and Mary Bender of Columbus Junction. Also surviving are 22 grandchildren, 60 great grandchildren, one sister, Ruby and husband Owen Miller, of Oxford and two brothers, Ivan Bender and Lloyd and Barbara Bender both of Kalona.
A memorial in Monroes's memory has been established for Lending Hands of Washington.
