South Carolina Governor, U.S. Congressman and U.S. Senator. He graduated from the South Carolina College, in 1825, taught school, wrote for a newspaper and was plantation planter. He studied law, admitted to the bar in 1828 and practiced in Columbia, South Carolina. In 1834, he was elected as a Nullifier to the Twenty-fourth Congress, serving until 1836, when he resigned. He spent two years in Europe, then returned to South Carolina and engaged in agricultural pursuits. In 1842, he was elected as a Democrat the 60th Governor of South Carolina, serving until 1844. He was elected as a Democrat to the United States Senate in 1857 to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of Andrew P. Butler and served until 1860, when he withdrew. He died on his plantation at age 56.
