SULPHUR - The funeral for Erie Mae Gardner Allen, 88, will be at 2 p.m., Monday, Oct. 31, 2005, in First Baptist Church. Dr. David Holder will officiate. Burial will be at a later date in Farquhar Cemetery.
Mrs. Allen died Friday, Oct. 28, in DeQuincy Memorial Hospital. Visitation is 5 - 8 p.m. today and 8 - 10 a.m. Monday in Hixson - Sulphur Memorial Funeral Home, 2051 E. Napoleon St., and from 1 p.m. Monday in the church.
Erie Mae was born on March 17, 1917, in Sulphur to James Matthew and Ethel Ellender Gardner. She graduated from Sulphur High School with honors and then from Northwestern Normal College in Natchitoches. She taught school in Starks, Westlake and Vincent Settlement and was the principal at Vincent Settlement in the 1940s.
Erie Mae married James Lawrence Allen on Dec. 17, 1938. They retired near Albuquerque, NM, and traveled extensively in the United States, Canada, Alaska, Newfoundland and Hawaii. She moved to Sulphur after her husband died in 1984.
She worked as a Pink Lady at West Calcasieu Cameron Hospital and worked at CareHelp in Sulphur for more than 10 years. She was a Sunday school teacher in Los Lunas NM, and loved her Sunday school class and church.
Survivors include two sisters, Elsie Gardner Moak and Joyce Gardner Moses, both of Sulphur; her beloved nephews and nieces, Larry Gardner of Dallas TX, Terry McMillin, Scott Moses and Lane Moak, all of Sulphur, George McMillan of Houston TX, Jamie McMillin of Louisville KY, Philip Moses of Lake Charles, Mark Moses of Baton Rouge, Carol Moak Buchert of Concord NC, and Marcia Moak Bertrand of Moss Bluff; and cousin, Allen Bean of Germantown TN.
She was preceded in death by her mother and father; her husband of 54 years; a brother, W. J. Gardner; and a sister, Lottie McMillin.
Memorial donations may be made to First Baptist Church of Sulphur, the Louisiana Baptist Children's Home, American Cancer Society or to CareHelp of Sulphur.
