Married: 4 Dec 1871 in Boston, Suffolk, Massachusetts at 23y of age (b. @1848 in Rochester, Monroe, NY to John A. and Elizabeth Hoxie). Spouse: Harriet Cora Moseley, 19y b. @ 1852 in Newburgh, Penobscot, Maine to Charles C. and Lucy A. Moseley.

He taught at many schools around the country. While teaching in Mass., he married Harriet Mosely in 1871. They had 3 daughters.

"In 1879 he moved to the south and bought a plantation at Land's End on St. Helena Island in S.C. While there he took every opportunity to study birds. A talented writer, he contributed approx. five hundred lengthy articles to magazines and newspapers, such as the Savannah Morning News.....".(From North American Bird Phenology Program).

He was also the author of the first Girl Scout Handbook and a friend of Juliette Low.
