Jonathan was born August 24, 1812 in Grainger County, TN. He was a child of John McCarty and Elizabeth Mayes. He was known as Love McCarty.

On March 26, 1832 he married Sytha (Sissy) Kirk in Grainger County, TN. In the spring of 1833 Love and Sissy moved to Greene County, MO. They went there with his mother, father, several brothers and one sister. Love and Sissy's first four children would be born on Love's parent's farm. Love and family moved to Madison County, AR after his father's death. Where their daughter, Martha Angeline McCarty, was born. Love, with his brother Sterling, would return to Grainger County, TN. While Love and Sissy lived there another son, Isaac Levi Sterling McCarty, known as Levi was born. They returned to Greene County, MO. where Sissy dies. Levi was about three years old when she died.

Love joined in the California gold rush. Leaving his children in the care of his daughter, Elizabeth, and other members of his family. He would be gone for years. When he returned he had a new wife, Elizabeth, who was only five years older than his daughter Elizabeth. Love and Elizabeth wouldn't have any children.

The Civil War was hard on Love. Two of his children, Thomas and Levi, and his brother Sterling, all died during the war.

Love and Elizabeth moved to Lead Hill, Boone County, AR. Where Love died on Aug. 20, 1903.

Love played the guitar and banjo, and loved to make his grandchildren laugh.
