Henry was the son of Dr. William Henry Burgoyne of Charleston, South Carolina. His family moved to New York City in the 1830s. He worked as a farmer in Onondaga County, New York, then moved to Albemarle County, Virginia, near Charlottesville, in 1856.

According to one of his descendants, Henry served the Confederacy in the Civil War under General Robert E. Lee, and was present at Appomattox when Lee surrendered.

Henry moved his family to Baltimore County, Maryland in the mid-1860s. According to 1870 and 1880 Census, he was living and farming in Baltimore County near Wiseburg. He died at the home of his daughter, Kate Wareheim, in Hampstead, Carroll County, Maryland.
