The Rev. Mother Rachel Rebecca Abrams-Gray, 85, a resident of Annapolis, Md. for 80 years, died of natural causes March 13, 2008 at Crofton Convalescent Center.
She was born Sept. 13, 1922, in Baltimore and attended Parole Elementary and the former Bates High School, Storer College, Fleet Business School, Anne Arundel Community College and Washington Bible College.
She began work doing laundry at Fort George G. Meade and the Naval Academy. Later, she worked as a community outreach worker for the Community Action Agency, before working as a foster grandparent, and at Grandma's House in Robinwood. She was a caregiver at Langton Green, and worked as a legislative assistant at the Maryland House of Delegates.
For several years she operated the Faith Home for the elderly and Pip's Family Daycare, named after her deceased daughter.
An evangelist, she preached the gospel message nationally and internationally; she was the church mother of First Christian Community Church, and was a member of King's Apostle Holiness Churches, Inc., Jesus Saves Family Ministry, and the Evangelist Association.
She enjoyed developing businesses, mentoring, reading, memorizing poetry, traveling, spending time with family and friends and helping those in need.
She was preceded in death by one daughter, Gwendolyn "Pip" Gray.
Survivors include her husband of over 60 years, Brewer Gray Sr.; three sons, Michael Gray of Upper Marlboro, Brewer Gray Jr. of Glen Burnie and Peter Gray of Severn; three daughters, Mary Gray of Annapolis, Evelyn Mason of Glen Burnie and Joy Williams of Arlington, Texas; one brother, Aaron Abrams of Baltimore; two sisters, Willie Issacs of Baltimore and Esther Murray of Denton; nine grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
