He was killed by an explosive device while on foot patrol in the Zangabad region, in the Panjwaii district, approximately 35 km southwest of Kandahar City.
Aged 32, he was born in Lynn Lake, Manitoba and attended school in Napanee, Ontario. He joined the military in October 1998 and served on peacekeeping missions in the Balkans. His medals and service decorations include the Former Yugoslavia Bar, South West Asia Service Medal and Afghanistan Bar, Canadian Peacekeeping Service Medal, and Commander-in-Chief Unit Commendation, Sacrifice Medal, Mentioned in Despatches.
Sgt Boyes is survived by his wife Alison, daughter Mackenzie, their dogs, his parents and other family members. He was remembered by his battle group commander as a natural leader who epitomized the warrior spirit.
He is the 81st soldier, along with a diplomat, to die since Canada first sent troops to Afghanistan in 2002.
Military funeral held March 26, 2008 at CFB Shilo in Manitoba. Interment on April 11, 2008 in Kingston.
