Estes Meade Johnson
Mrs. Estes Meade Johnson, 84, of Hillsboro, died Saturday March 28, 1998 in a local nursing home. She was born November 5, 1913, in Honey Grove, Texas, the daughter of the late Joseph Ellison and Nina Kate (Burroghs) Meade. She was preceded in death by her parents: one son, Jimmy Don Johnson; and three brothers, Joe Burroughs Meade, Jack Meade and John William Meade.
She is survived by: her husband, John Newton Johnson of Hillsboro; one son and daughter-in-law, Dr. John Meade Johnson and Diane of Whitney; one brother and three sisters, J. E. Meade, Sr., Marita Lane, Lois Rhoades and Wynclle Witcher all of the Honey Grove area; one granddaughter, Stacey Barrett of Longview; one grandson, Christopher Johnson of Portland, Orgon; two great-grandchildren; three nephews, Jack Meade, Johnn Meade and Joe Meade; cousins, Ruth Burroughts Riddlesperger of Honey Grove. Floyd Burroughs of Honey Grove, Mary Jo Burroughs Brooks of Midland. Helen Burroughs Gabrel of Granbury. Addie Lee Burroughs Gillespie of Imperial; close friend, Charles H. "Pug" Gabrel of Granbury; numerous other cousins and a host of friends.
She grew up and attended school in Honey Grovel She married John Newton Johnson October 16, 1933. They moved to Odessa where they both were employed by Phillips Petroleum Company. She was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother, who loved children. She was active and supportive in school activities and was a Cub Scout Leader. She rendered faithful and inspiring service as a member of the First Baptist Church in Goldsmith where she served as Superintendent of Sunday School and was active in all church activities. Moving to Hillsboro in 1972. She was a faithful member of the First Baptist Church until her health failed.
"Mi mi" as she was affectionately known to her family and friends will be sorely missed by all who knew and loved her. Funeral services were held Tuesday, March 31, 1998 at 2:00 p.m. at the First Baptist Church in Hillsboro, with Rev. Leon Vorpahl and Rev. Kenneth James officiating. Entombment was at Hillcrest Garden of Memory near Hillsboro. Edens Funeral Home in Hillsboro was in charge of services. Pallbearers were: C.H. "Pug" Gabrel, Catherine Gabrel, Gary Gabrel, Jack Meade, Johnny Meade, Joe Meade, Benjamin Beyer and Andrew Beyer.
