Martin Swift, Sr. a representative farmer and stock raiser of Oregon Township reside on section 18, where he owns 285 acres of land all of which is under a high state of cultivation. He is a native of Ireland, born November 13 1828 and is the son of Thomas and Mary (Connell) Swift both of whom were also natives of Ireland, an died there some years ago.
Martin Swift, Sr. was reared on a farm an din 1848 came to America and settled in Albany New York, then in other parts of the State fro a period of eight (8) years during which time he was engaged as a teamster. He then emigrated to Knox County, Illinois where he remained until 1871. In 1871 he came to Washington County, Iowa and purchased 77 acres of land on section 18 in Oregon township. He kept adding by subseguint purchases until he owned on of the finest farms in Oregon township 285 acres of land with a fine residence, barn and other out building necessary for the proper conduct of farming and stock raising. The entire surroundings of the farm prove that its possessor is a man who understands his business, and is only content with the best.
Martin Swift married in New York in 1856 to Mary Gavin likewise a native of Ireland born in 1831. By this union there was born eight (8) children - Mrs. Abigail (John R. Flynn) 2. James married Ms. Ettie Lindsey 3. John T. married Jessie Reeves 4. Martin II married Ms. Julia Tobin 5. Mrs. Mary Ellen (Molly) married

6. Francis married Nellie Boyd 7. Jane Florence (Jennie) married Francis Xavior Bruty also spelled Brut'e 8. Aloysus Bartholmew "Ab" who married Lizzie Gugerty.
Mr. Swift is truly a self made man. Like thousands of others of his fellow countryman, who knew there was no chance for a poor man to acquire more than an ordinary living in the old country, he came to the U.S. the land which is a refuge for the oppressed of all nations. Here with nothing on which to begin save a willing mind with strong arms and a determination to do he bad toiled on until now he is among the well to do farmers of Washington County, with a farm of which he is justly proud, and which he can say is the result of his own labor assisted by his admirable wife and family.
Politically he is a Democrat
Religiously he is a Catholic

Martin Swift and his sister Bridget sailed from the Port of Galway on "The Cushamachree Ship". They arrived in America on the 23 April 1848.
Martin married Mary Gavin 21 January 1856 in Troy, New York. To this union eight children were born: Mrs. Abigail Flynn, James Swift, Mrs. Mary Ellen McGugin, Martin II, John Thomas Swift, Aloysus Bartholmew Swift, Francis Swift, and Mrs. Jane Florence Bruty.
Martin married second to Mary Jane Boyd 29 December 1896 in Washington Iowa and to this union had one child Richard Bernard Swift.
