Betty Jane Cox was first married to the Honorable John Emile Peurifoy. Ambassador Peurifoy died in an auto accident in Thailand in 1955. He was the former Undersecretary of State for the U.S. State Department during the Truman. administration. One of his primary responsibilities was managing the organizing logistics of the United Nations.
During their marriage they served in Greece, Guatamala, and Thailand as Ambassador and wife. She has written a humorous account of their time in Greece. It was Betty that gave the Ambassador the name "Pistol Packing Peurifoy. He was known during the disturbing times in Guatemala for putting his feet up on the desk with his formal jacket falling open to revel the pistol he wore during his time there.
Betty and John had two children, John Clinton and Daniel Byrd Peurifoy. They are buried with their Father in Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, Virginia.
She married Arthur Chichester Stewart following the death of John E. Peurifoy.
