Samuel was the third child of twelve born to Able Inman & Nancy Mary Antrim; his siblings being: Mary Inman, Clayton Inman, Hannah Inman, Jacob Inman, William Inman, Sarah Ann Inman, Phebe Inman, John W. Inman, George W. Inman, Martha J. Inman, and Nelson Inman.

He was united in marriage to Elizabeth Forsyth on September 3, 1840 in Adams Twp., Decatur County, Indiana. To this union ten known children were born: Unknown Inman, Abel Inman, Nancy Ellen Inman, Grace E. Inman, Mary Ann Inman, Stamper L. Inman, Susan Malissa Inman, William Antrim Inman, Anna Viola Inman, Sarah Frances Inman.

He spent most of his life in farming. He also served during the Civil War in Company K, 3rd Iowa Cavalry Union Army, enlisting on February 22, 1864 at the age of 46.

As Elizabeth died in 1863, he spent most of his life as a widower, living with different children.

He died at the age of 88y, 4m, 6d.
