Commander Sturdy was not feeling well when Pompeii sailed on last Friday evening. He was taken sick off Cape Henry soon afterwards, became unconscious and died Monday. There was no physician on board. He was a native of Maine, Fifty-one years of age and had been in the service thirty-six years. The family of the deceased live at Annapolis.
Commander Sturdy was buried at Key West Tuesday afternoon with military honors.

E W (Edwin or Edward) is listed in the 1850 (Edwin W) & 1860 (Edward W) census as the son of Joseph E (1820 MA) & Rhoda A (1820 NY) Sturdy. He is also listed as a midshipman at the US Naval Academy 1862-1866 (Note: he had difficulty maintaining a clean student disciplinary record)
