PIERRE BARCELOUX. One of the well improved and highly cultivated ranches of Glenn county belongs to Pierre Barceloux, and is the result of his own unaided effort and industry in the past years. He is a native of Quebec having been born near Sault Ste. Marie November 24, 1837. His father, Pascal Barceloux, a native of the same place, engaged as a farmer in that locality until his death, which occurred when his son was about three years old. His mother, Margaret (Saltsayer) Barceloux, was also born and died in that locality. They were the parents of two sons and three daughters, of whom Pierre Barceloux is the youngest. He received a very limited education in the common school in the vicinity of his home, where he remained until 1859. In that year he came to California and in Amador county engaged in working on a farm for wages. In 1866 he went to Virginia City, Nev., where he followed mining for two years, thereafter spending one year in his Canadian home, after which he once more located in California. In Yolo county he engaged in farming for two years and in 1871 he came to his present place, five miles southwest of Willows Glenn county, taking up on hundred and sixty acres of railroad land, and purchasing the same when it came into the market. He has continued to add to his original purchase until he now owns three sections and a half, or about twenty-five hundred acres in all, of which one thousand acres are devoted to the cultivation of barley each year. In addition to this large property he also owns twelve hundred acres located two miles west of Willows, where his son makes his home.
In Sault Ste. Marie, Canada, Mr. Barceloux was united in marriage with Marie La Cross, a native of that place, and they became the parents of six children, three of whom are living; Henry, Cora and George. Mr. Barceloux is a member of the Roman Catholic Church and politically he is a staunch Democrat. In all public matters he has shown himself a public-spirited citizen.

PETER BARCELOUX, PIONEER OF 1859, DIES SATURDAY

The death of Pierre (Peter) Barceloux occurred late Saturday afternoon following an illness of several days complicated with the infirmities of old age, Mr. Barceloux having passed his 81st birthday last November.
Born near Montreal, Canada, in 1837 he came to California in 1859 and moved to what is now Glenn county in 1871, settling with his wife on 160 acres of railroad land southwest of here. Later he extended his holdings to include 1,280 acres west of Willows and for many years conducted farming operations on a large scale.
Among the local improvements the Barceloux building stands to his credit and in many ways he had contributed to the upbuilding of the county. He was a director and stockholder in the Glenn County Savings Bank, the Bank of Orland, and also in the Fort Sutter Bank of Sacramento. For many years he served as a school trustee in the Lincoln district but although urged by his friends to become a candidate for supervisor, he declined to do so and gave very little attention to politics.
Throughout his residence of 47 years in this community he has from the beginning been a booster for the Sacramento valley and firmly believed in its great future. Although Mr. Barceloux reached San Francisco in the early days with only $10 in his pocket, he was rated among the most prosperous citizens of the county at the time of his death.
He is survived by his wife, who was Miss Lumina Lacroix and to whom he was married in Canada in 1869, and by three children: Henry J. Barceloux of Willows, George Barceloux of Orland, and a daughter, Cora, now Mrs. Fred Gelinas. Two other children who died in early childhood and a third, Ernest, passed away at the age of 31, leaving three children, Elmer, a soldier now stationed in Illinois, Vernon and Ernest Barceloux, students at Santa Clara University.
The funeral will be held at the Catholic church tomorrow morning at 10 o'clock. - Transcribed by E.
