John Riley Bass was born the son of Jacob and Elizabeth Bass. He spent most of his childhood either working on the family farm or traveling to Kansas state with his parents on their teaming adventures. On the 23rd of November, 1874 he married Anna L. McCleary in the county of Gibson in the state of Indiana. Together they raised 2 boys: John P. and Willis; and 4 girls: Marietta C., Eunice Edna, Martha D. and Ada R. John made a life for himself farming in Gibson County and died there at the age of 73.
