Calvin E. Fry was a son of Mary Catherine (née Rhodes) and Jacob Fry. In 1887 at age 18, he arrived in Jefferson to learn harness-making with A. D. Doty. After completing his apprenticeship and becoming a journeyman, he married Annie C. Rhoderick on 11 June 1895. He worked for the railway from 1907 to 1912, when he was asked to return to harness-making business. He bought the business in 1930, which he conducted as "C. E. Fry's Harness and Repair Shop."
