Hugh Barr was an early settler of Macoupin and Jersey Counties, Illinois, along with John Markham, Silas Drum, and his own brother Benjamin Barr. Born in Lebanon, New Jersey to James Barr and Rachel Ross, Hugh moved as a young man to Frederick, Virginia, where he married Mary Laidley on June 21, 1815. They moved several times -- first to Ohio, where daughter Rutha was born, then to Pennsylvania, birthplace of son Robert. Soon after the arrival of Robert, Hugh moved his brood with his brother Benjamin's family to begin a new settlement in Illinois -- Jersey County -- named after their home state. Hugh was a farmer until the 1840's, when he began practicing the cooper trade, which he did until his 70's.
