There are some discrepancies between various records regarding the exact age of Stephen Bowling. He was probably "only" 88 years old instead of 103 as recorded on his death certificate. The following is a transcription his obituary which ran in the Knoxville Journal Tuesday, October 27, 1925:

Centenarian Was One of
Pioneers of Knox County
and Tennessee
Stephen Bowling, one of the pioneers of this section, died Sunday night at the age of 103 years. He lived at Bell's Ridge on Rutledge pike for many years and was well known throughout this section.
Funeral services will be conducted from the Beaver Creek Presbyterian church Tuesday afternoon at 2 o'clock. Rev. J.C. Jones will officiate. Interment will be in New Gray cemetery. Surviving the centenarian are his widow, Mrs. Mary Bowling and ten children, J.B. Bowling, Fountain City; Sam, Stephen, James and Henry Bowling, Knoxville; R.C. Bowling, Bowling Green, Ky.; William M. Bowling, Anderson county; Miss Lillie and Peter Bowling, at home; Mrs. Nettie Grace, Knoxville; one sister, Mrs. Celia Milligan, Knoxville, 40 grandchildren and 20 great grandchildren.
Mr. Bowling was born at Bowling Green, Ky., when that community was sparsely settled. He engaged in farming in early life and retired from farming a few years ago. He had been a resident of Tennessee for years and was a good citizen and devout Christian.
