Freddie Adkins Jr., 70, passed away peacefully in his sleep March 1, 2008, after a short illness with his family at his side. A native of Emporia, Va., he was the son of the late Freddie Adkins Sr. and Esther L. Hall Adkins. He retired from the U.S. Navy with more than 20 years of service. Freddie loved fishing in his spare time. He leaves to cherish his memory his devoted wife, Joan Hill Adkins; a daughter, Debra A. Tatum of Boston, Mass.; stepdaughter, Ursula Hill; four grandchildren and great-grandchildren; two sisters, Mary Janice A. Daniels of Emporia and Joanna A. Green (Earmon) of Newark, N.J.; two nieces, Maggie D. Wright (Dennis) and Vanessa D. Branch (Tony); one nephew, Frederick Daniels and his daughter, Felice Jordan; his beloved pet, Sam; and a host of other relatives and friends. The family acknowledges the dedicated services from Chesapeake General Hospital Hospice Comfort Care nurse, Susan Adams, Linda Bellew and April Kellam. A funeral will be held at noon Friday in Mount Zion Baptist Church, Berkley, 900 Middlesex St. The Rev. Dr. Charles Hart will officiate. Interment will be in Albert G. Horton Jr. Memorial Veterans Cemetery, Suffolk. Family and friends will assemble at 4200 Rivershore Road one hour prior to the service for the procession to the church. Metropolitan Funeral Service, Berkley Ave. Chapel, is in charge. Condolences may be offered to the family at www.metropolitanfuneralservice.com.
