Gertrude was the oldest child of 7 children
and my father's only sister.
In late October 1924 Gertrude and her 12-yr old brother, Jack, came down with Typhoid fever. Gertrude was sick for 17 days and she died at home. Her brother was expected to follow in a few days. The doctor inserted a tube into Jack's lung so it would drain. Jack was sick for months, he lost his lung but he did recover from his illness, he never got over the lost of his sister.
My father suffered all of his life with Lung problems and he never forgot his sister.

A place is vacant by our hearth,
Which never can be filled.
God in his wisdom has recalled,
The one his love had given
And though the body slumbers here,

Petty Happenings
When the news came Friday morning that Miss Gertrude Clark had passed to her heavenly home, it caused the town of Petty and surrounding country to be sad, all mourning over the passing of this pure young lady. Gertrude had been ill three weeks. She suffered but was patient, and she said she never would recover when she first took sick. The prayers of parents, relatives, and friends were that she might recover. She seemed better Tuesday, but she said,
"It is only a short while here with me Mamma, don't grieve for me. I am going home to rest."
Gertrude was born September 5, 1904, and passed away November 14, 1924. She was the eldest child and only daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Dillard Clark.
When Mr. and Mrs. Clark moved here there was no Christian church here. Gertrude always attended the Methodist church, Sunday school and Epworth League, in which she was an efficient worker. She had been a member of the Christian church at Windom 12 years.
She always entered the church with a smile and greeted old and young alike.
She will be greatly missed here among the young ladies and young men of the Methodist church who are sad over her passing, as she was loved and held in high esteem by all who had the pleasure of knowing her.
Gertrude was salutatorian of the graduating class here last May. There were four young ladies in the class, she being the first one to pass away.
The funeral was at Honey Grove Saturday morning at 10 o'clock at the Christian church, conducted by Revs. W. J. Haywood of Honey Grove, and Vernon of Petty.
The burial was at Oakwood Cemetery, Honey Grove. A large crowd from here attended. Quite a number from Windom were also present. She is survived by her grief-stricken parents, three brothers and grandfather and other relatives, who have the deepest sympathy of all our people in town and country.
As I write I think when the sunset's gold
Is flooding river and hill and shore,
Someday we shall all stand by the river cold
And list to the dip of the boatman's oar;
And when perchance the well-known hail
Again shall echo along the strand
We shall pass from sight with the boatman pale
To the better shore of the spirit land.
We shall know the loved ones who have gone before,
And joyfully sweet will the meeting be.
When over the river, the peaceful river,
The angel of death will carry us all.
