Body of C. A. Callahan Buried Friday Afternoon
The Record stated last Wednesday (the day the paper was issued on account of Thanksgiving)that Mr. C. A. Callahan was critically ill at his home in the Bethel community. It was expected that he could survive only a short time. He passed away Thursday night of last week.
The body of this good man was laid to rest in Cottage Hill Cemetery at 2 p.m. Friday, following impressive services over at Cottage Hill Church. Those conducting the services were the Revs. Frank Wilkinson of Weston, L. T. Grumbles of Celina and A. R. Morgan of Southmayd, his former pastor at Weston. These ministers spoke of the deceased with much feeling and praise in the presence of more than a house full of people.
Local Undertaker S. K. Pafford prepared the body for burial and laid it away. A profusion of floral offerings attested to the esteem of Mr. Callahan's neighbors for him, the Rev. A. R. Morgan delivering an especially touching eulogy.
Mr. Callahan was at the time of his death 78 years, eleven months and two days old. He was born in Montgomery, Ala., Dec. 27, 1856. He came to Texas at an early age and settled near Weston, where he resided until his death removed him from the walks of men. He was without ostentation and lived his life from day to day in a manner that endeared him to those who came in contact with him.
Mr. Callahan was first married to Miss Sallie McBride on Nov. 21, 1881. To this union were born two children, Mrs. Jim Moore of Detroit, Texas, and Mrs. Wes Burge of McKinney. Being separated from his companion by death, Mr. Callahan later married Miss Carrie Bilderback on Aug. 20, 1885, seven children coming to bless this union, as follows: Mrs. Rush Lee, deceased, Jim Callahan and Mrs. Phillip Buchanan of Weston, Mrs. Fred Marks of Celina, Walter Callahan, Moran, Texas; Mrs. Leland Flannery, Dallas, Texas and Willie Callahan, who died in infancy. With this exception the children together with the wife survive.
Mr. Callahan professed faith in Christ at an early age and united with the Methodist Church, of which he remained a faithful member until death. The deceased was a kind husband and a loving father and his sincere upright life endeared him to all who knew him.
Mr. Callahan had requested that "Will the Waters Be Chilly" be sung at his funeral and this was sung by a long-time friend of the family, Mr. Alvin Brown. A special solo was also rendered by Mrs. Guy Bunch.
