Richard A. Newhard, 74
A retired 22-year U.S. Army veteran who subsequently retired also from Fort Wayne Community Schools, Richard A. Newhard, 74, of Fort Wayne and a native of Ossian, died Thursday at St. Joseph Hospital in Fort Wayne.
Born Feb. 23, 1926, at Ossian, he was a son of Chancy and Clara Wilson Newhard.
His retirement from the Army in 1966 came after 22 years of service in a period spanning years of World War II, the Korean War and the Vietnam War.
Mr. Newhard was a member of the Calvary United Methodist Church, the Waynedale Order of Eastern Star, Ossian F & AM 297, 32nd Degree Shriners, Scottish Rite, Ossian Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2861 and Bluffton American Legion Post 111.
Surviving is a brother, Kenneth Max Newhard of Uniondale. Two other brothers, Garth and Morris Donaldson Newhard, and a sister, Helen Knight, are deceased.
Visitation will be Monday from noon until the 2 p.m. time of funeral services at the Elzey & Haggard Home for Funerals in Waynedale, 6810 Old Trail Road.
The Waynedale OES special services will be at 1 p.m. Monday and and Masonic Lodge services at 1:30, with the funeral service at 2 p.m.
Burial will be in Covington Memorial Gardens, Fort Wayne, with military honors by the Bluffton American Legion Post 111.
Memorials to the Shriners Crippled Children's Hospital.
