Elijah worked for and retired from the rail road. When his children were young he worked as section foreman in Sabinal, D'Hanis, Eagle Pass, among other towns in Texas. After retirement he lived in Marfa, Shafter and Presidio. In Presidio he owned and operated a service station an occupation he had when younger and living in Atascosa County, Texas. Not long before his death he sold the station and he and his 6th wife moved to Sabinal on a little place that had been owned by someone in her family.
They both got sick at the same time, were transported to the hospital together and admitted in a Uvalde hospital where Alpha died a few days later. Elijah recovered and went to live with his daughter Marie Hearn in Poteet.
