A Civil War veteran, he enlisted and mustered into federal service at Carlisle February 23, 1865, as a private with Co. G, 28th Pennsylvania Infantry, and discharged by surgeon's certificate per general order June 9, 1865, from Fairfax Seminary U.S. Hospital.
The birth date on his tombstone is subject to debate. At enlistment, he claimed to be thirty-four years of age and had no reason to offer a false age. That matches his entry in the 1850 census. But the 1860 census says 1836, the 1880 census claims 1830, and he is absent from the 1870 census.
