George F. Earley, Jr., 77, of Winthrop Street died Thursday at a Portland hospital of lung cancer.

The son of, George F. and Winnifred (Harris) Earley Sr., and he attended local parochial schools. He was born in Portland, Maine.

During World War II, George, served in the Marine Corps in the Asiatic-Pacific Theater of Operations, where he received a Purple Heart for wounds received in action.

After the war, Mr. Earley returned to Portland. He joined the Portland Fire Department and was stationed at Central Fire Station on Congress Street.

George's, working career was in the construction industry with Local 12. He worked on several major projects including the Richards Wing at Maine Medical Center, the original Maine National Bank (now known as Post Office Square) and the power station at Cousins Island.

George, was a member of the VFW Post 6859 of Portland and a communicant of St. Peter's Catholic Church.

On 04 Aug 1946, in Maine, he married, Mary Cremonese they had 53 years of marriage; a daughter, Sandra M.; three sons, George F. III; Steven G.; and Anthony J.; sisters, Ruth, Lillian and Winnifred "Susie"; brothers, John, Joseph, Francis "Frank" and Matthew; seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Conroy-Tully Funeral Home, 172 State St. Prayers will be at the funeral home followed by a funeral Mass at St. Peter's Church. Burial at Calvary Cemetery, South Portland.
