William David Harrison volunteered for the Confederate army and in 1860/61 at age 22, he put together a company of men and joined the CSA as a Lieutenant. He served the entire four years of the Civil War as a member of the Company C., 13th Tennessee Regiment under General Vaughn.

He was captured at the battle of Shiloh (April 6-7, 1862) but escaped the same night. He fought in eight battles including Shiloh, where he was shot in the leg, and Stone Mountain GA (September 14, 1862), where he was promoted to Captain in CSA in recognition of his courage while in action.
