LaVerna was born on April 30, 1923, at the family home one mile east of Oshkosh, the second of four children, to Willard Raymond and Leona Alvina (O'Dell) Hutson. She grew up and received her education in Oshkosh, graduating from the Garden County High School in Oshkosh in 1941. LaVerna took normal training in high school and began her teaching career in District 66 northwest of Oshkosh. She also taught north of Lewellen in District 50 and southwest of Oshkosh in District 4. LaVerna attended Kearney State Teachers college for six summers. She also attended Scotts Bluff Junior College while teaching at Mitchell, receiving her Junior College Diploma in 1950. She continued to further her education with off-campus courses from Chadron State Teacher's College and the University of Nebraska.

It was during her time teaching in Mitchell that LaVerna met Winford Vero Adams in 1948. They were united in marriage on August 27, 1950 in Oshkosh and made their home in Oshkosh that same year after the sugar beet campaign. They made their first home in Oshkosh in a small house on the acre of land LaVerna purchased while teaching. In 1953, they had a basement house built and in 1964 started building the house up from the basement. Winford passed away in 1986 and LaVerna continued to reside in Oshkosh until recently.

LaVerna attended the Oshkosh Wesleyan Church and belonged to the Women's Club.

She is survived by her children, Stanley Adams of Oshkosh, Donna and husband Randy Wolvington of Chadron, Kevin Adams of Las Vegas, NV, and Melodie Adams of Scottsbluff; special friend, Bernard Benzen of Oshkosh; three grandchildren, Patrick and Rob Wolvington both of Rapid City, SD, and Mike Wolvington of Pine Bluffs, WY; sister, Zella and husband Leroy Rathbun of Lemoyne; sister-in-law, Roene Hutson of Chadron; and one nephew, Denny Hutson and two nieces, Gaylene Potts and Kimberly Lehl.

She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; brothers, Virgil and Kenneth Hutson.
