NEWPORT — Mrs. Frances Emma Washam Alvis of Newport died Sunday, Feb. 24, 2008.

She was born November 13, 1913 at Jackson County, the daughter of Don and Agnes (Ragsdale) Washam, Sr. She married Mr. Arvil Phillip Alvis on January 10, 1936. They were married sixty years at the time of his death in October, 1996. Mrs. Alvis was a homemaker, and a wonderful cook. Her family has yet to find anyone who could cook a pot of pinto beans like hers. She was a truly happy person, who was the epitome of hospitality. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Newport.

Mrs. Alvis was preceded in death by her husband, Arvil Phillip Alvis; her parents; several brothers and sisters; and two grandchildren whom she dearly loved, Steven Phillip Davis and Laura June (Davis) Johnson.

She is survived by her daughter, Laura Laverne Alvis Davis of Batesville; son, Donald Phillip "Bootie" Alvis of Heber Springs; sisters, Nitabelle Milheim and Helen Bender, both of Detroit; grandson, Eddie Phillip Alvis; granddaughters, Pennie Alvis Bellar, Teresa Williams and Stephenie Parker; seven great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Jackson's Newport Funeral Home Chapel. Interment will be in Walnut Grove Cemetery.

Visitation will be this evening from 6-8 at the funeral home.
