Mr. Arensberg died Friday, Feb. 22, 2008, at Baldwin Healthcare Center in Baldwin City.
He was born Aug. 6, 1924, in Atchison, the son of Sylvester J. and Cecelia M. Schletzbaum Arensberg. He moved from Kansas City, Mo., to Lawrence in 1951.
Mr. Arensberg served in the U.S. Army during World War II in the 110th Company Battalion of the 28th Infantry in Europe. He was an instrument repairman and retired from General Motors in 1989. He previously worked in the photography department at the Lawrence Journal-World. He was a member of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church and Veterans of Foreign Wars Alford-Clarke Post 852.
He married Mary Lou McCue on Aug. 9, 1946, in Atchison. She died July 24, 1989.
Mr. Arensberg was also preceded in death by a brother and a grandson.
Survivors include a son, John R. Jr. and wife Marsha, Lone Jack, Mo.; four daughters; Cheryl Rothwell, Charlene Hodge and husband Terry, both of Lawrence, Brenda Murray and husband Charles, Burlington, and Diana Leming and husband Michael, Lecompton; two brothers, Bud Arensberg, Mobile, Ala., Phil Arensberg, Memphis, Tenn.; two sisters, Mary O'Neil, St. Louis, and Peggy Pascutti, Bonita Springs, Fla.; 11 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
