He also co-wrote the the song "The Ballad of The Green Berets" with US Army Sgt. Barry Sadler which was a number one hit in 1966. A former veteran war correspondent, at the 2007 5th Special Forces Group Reunion Banquet, he was confirmed as a life long member of 5th group and made honorary Ambassador Green Beret Kentucky Colonel.
