MATHENY - Steven Wayne Matheny was born in Jacksonville, Florida on December 30, 1948. He died suddenly on Saturday, May 17, 2003, in Orange Park, Florida.
Steven was a graduate of Florida State University. It was in the early 1970's, that Steve found his true love of SCUBA diving. SCUBA was so much a part of his life, and was a distinct reflection of who he was in life: adventurous and gregarious. In 1974, he started his own SCUBA diving business called "Aquatics Unlimited." He trained for years and became a master instructor. He taught many people: customers, family, friends, and community organizations. Numerous people came to know SCUBA diving because of Steve. During the time he was instructing, he certified over 8000 people. He and his store was ranked #1 in the United States for several years. He was extremely friendly and jovial, and he will be sorely missed.
He is survived by his mother, Sarah Starr Matheny; two brothers, Larry Matheny (Carol), Ray Matheny (Marcee); two sisters, Kathy Beck (Ray), Julia Deck (Jim), and long-time friend and companion, Francis Jacobs.
Visitation will be held tonight, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. and services will be Friday morning at 10 a.m. at Hardage-Giddens Mandarin Funeral Home, 11801 San Jose Blvd., Jacksonville. Dignity Memorial.
