Billy Jack "Spook" Murphy was the head football coach for the Memphis State University Tigers from 1958 to 1971 and earned a 91-44-1 record. Murphy's 1963 team was the school's first undefeated team in twenty-five years, and Murphy was named national coach of the year. He is on the 2007 College Football Hall of Fame ballot. Murphy died at age 87 on Thursday morning.
Murphy was married to the late Elizabeth Parrish of Starkville, Miss., and the coupled had two children, son Michael and daughter Libby.
