Melvin Monroe Gates, Jr. age 72 of Clovis, NM died Wednesday, February 20, 2008, at Plains Regional Medical Center in Clovis, NM. Services will be held at 10:00 AM Saturday, February 23, 2008, at 16th and Pile Church of Christ with Jim Gammon officiating. Burial will follow at Browning Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Stan Musick, Kerry Musick, Harold Terry, Mike Terry, Danny Terry, Karl Terry, Jeff Terry, Steve Robertson, and Mark Robertson.

Melvin was born February 26, 1935, to Melvin Monroe and Ruby Irene (Green) Gates in McAlister, NM. He married Mildred Terry June 20, 1958, in Arlington, VA. He served in the US Army from 1957 to 1963. During his service he was awarded a Sharpshooter Metal and served on the Arlington National Cemetery Honor Guard. He received his BS degree from West Texas State University and his graduate studies at Texas Tech University. He taught Agriculture in the Silverton and Bovina Texas Public Schools and Biology at Clovis High School. He was an active member of 16th and Pile Church of Christ and an all around cowboy. He studied welding and air conditioning.
Survivors include his son, Jim Gates of Clovis, NM; a sister, Nona Faye (H.R.) Terry of Portales, NM; three sisters-in-law, Betty (Gordon) Musick of Lubbock, TX, Judy Terry of Portales, NM, and Sharon (Gary) Grider of Clovis, NM; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Melvin and Ruby Gates; his wife, Mildred Gates; and a son, Bob Loyd Gates.
