John Calvin, son of John Alexander Newsom and Mary Ellen Luck of Pisgah, Randolph Cty N.C. He was a lumberman looking for good stands of timber to buy when he met May Lavonia Sidbury in Onslow Cty N.C. near Hampstead. He eloped with her and made a life in Wilmington and Whiteville N.C. Managing a hotel in Wilmington and sawmills in and around Whiteville. He was a good businessman. He had 3 sons and a daughter. Clifford, Chester, Leslie and Mamie Ray. Chester died soon after birth. John died at home of respitory problems, probably bronchial pneumonia in his own bed in 1941.John Calvin Newsom was a Lumberman who sought good stands of timber establishing on-site sawmills. He also owned and managed a large hotel in downtown Wilmington NC during the 1920's. He established a headquarters for his enterprises in Whiteville NC and lived there from the late 1920's until his death in 1941 from bronchitis.
