Edwin was from Bloomington, Illinois when he enlisted in the 5th Illinois Cavalry on Sept. 14, 1861 at Bloomington. He was mustered in as a private on Dec. 10, 1861 at Camp Butler, Ill. The following personal characteristics were recorded about him: he was a 20 year old married farmer, standing 5'9" and with sandy hair, hazel eyes and a florid complexion. He was a native of Providence, Rhode Island. His death at Vicksburg, Mississippi was due to disease.
