Lucius Garvin was born in Cumberland on February 2, 1908, the son of Lucius & Sarah (Tomlinson) Garvin. He received his degrees from Brown University: BA in 1928, MA in 1929 and his Ph.D.in 1933. He was an instructor of Philosophy at Indiana University (1933-1935), Professor of Philosophy at Oberlin College, Ohio (1939-1952), Professor and Head of Philosophy at the University of Maryland (1952-1961), Dean of the College, then Vice President for Academic Affairs, and finally Executive Vice President and Provost at Macalester College(1961-1971). The author of many several on ethics, he died at his home in Rancho Bernardo, CA on Sunday, April 10, 1977, after a long illness.
