Hugh McCallister was the son of Alexander McCallister.
He was a veteran of the War of 1812. He served under Captain Robert Hayes Company, 1st Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Militia from April 27, 1812 to June 30, 1812 and in the 2ond Regiment (Findlay's) Captain David Sutton's Company Volunteer Infantry from July 1, 1812 to October 26, 1812. He was a prisoner of war of the British most of this time due to General Hull's surrender of his American Army at Citadel (Detroit) in August of 1812. Then on April 1, 1813 he joined Captain Mannery's 2ond Company, United States (Ohio) Rangers and was discharged six months later on October 12, 1813.
The father of Mary (Ellis) McCalister (b. 1823, d. 1904) and George Washington McCallister (b. 1847, d. 1932).
He came to Iowa in 1860. He was married 3 times, first to Susan Kelsay (b. abt 1796, d. abt 1834) on January 15, 1815 (10 children), Mary Lillie Holiday (12 children) and Catherine Hougham (b. 1807, d. aft 1882) in 1854 (no children) and was still married to her at the time of his death.
The father of 22 children total, of whom only 5 survived him at the time of his death. In the 1880 Census for Pilot, Iowa County, Iowa, he was living with his son George W. and Rebecca McCallister along with Hugh's third wife Catherine.
Hugh died from a fall off a horse while attempting to break the horse at the age of 90.
