Golda Stubbs Lowder was born Sept. 26, 1917 in Parowan, UT., to Walter and Anna Lenora Pendleton Stubbs. She was named Golda because of the beautiful auburn hair which glowed from her tiny newborn head. She passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by family, on Dec. 4, 2007 of causes incident to age.
Golda married Art Whitney Lowder on Sept. 26, 1937, the day she turned 20. It was a 69 year love affair. They were devoted to each other. When Art became severely disabled with Alzheimer's and Golda was no longer able to care for him, she visited him every day for 5 years in the nursing home to help him eat, to hug and kiss him, and hold his hand. They lived in Parowan, Fillmore, and Pinedale, WY. Then, during the Great Depression they moved to Long Beach, CA. It was tough going for them. Golda said they often had only onion sandwiches to eat because that's all they could afford. During that time, Art's mother was aware of their situation and trying to help them out, sent them 2 chickens she had butchered through the mail. The postman delivered their package on the end of a long stick! Sometimes they had to choose between spending 5 cents to ride the bus 30 blocks or buy a candy bar and walk. Often the candy bar won out. They had many stories to tell about this time in their lives.
They returned to Parowan after living about 5 years in Long Beach. But, in 1954, California called to them again and back they went to Long Beach where they lived for about 6 years. Then, work transferred them to the San Jose area. Golda worked as a cashier and a pharmacy clerk at Sav-On Drug stores in both Long Beach and San Jose. They yearned for the mountains and slower pace of living so they, again, moved back to Parowan after retirement in 1978. Golda and Art loved to dance. While living in Long Beach they would often go to the Aragon ballroom in Santa Monica where Lawrence Welk's orchestra played and they would dance the night away.
Golda was a beautiful and classy lady. Her makeup, hair, and dress were impeccable. There was not a wrinkle in her face and people could not believe she was 90. She was always described as "such a cute lady" and "fabulous". She was a wonderful cook and loved to garden. Children loved to visit her and bring her gifts. Of course, they were rewarded with getting to dip their hands into her bottomless candy jar. Her grandchildren and great grandchildren were a constant source of joy to her. She will be missed more than words can express.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, brothers; Chester and Clarence Stubbs; Sister: Annabelle (Heyborne), Grace (Heyborne), Elda (Condie), Lois (Butcher), and EvaDene (Burchert). One brother, Dick of Denio, NV is the family's last survivor. She was also preceded by her lovely daughter-in-law Beverly (Dennis). She has 8 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren, and 1 great-great-grandchild. Her children are Patty Jensen (Bob) and Dennis Lowder of Parowan. Funeral services will be held on Friday, December 7, 2007 at 11:00 a.m. at the Parowan 1st & 2nd Ward Chapel. Interment will be in the Parowan City Cemetery under the direction of Southern Utah Mortuary.
