Isaac W. Tipton, 80, of East Brandywine, died on Tuesday, Aug. 22, 2000, at Brandywine Hospital, after a long illness. He had lung cancer.
He was the husband of Betty Hadfield Tipton, with whom he shared 59 years of marriage.
Born in Pigeon Roost, N.C., he was the son of the late Fieldon J. Tipton Sr. and Hester Lewis Tipton. He and eight of his ten brothers migrated to the New Bolton area of southern Chester Country in 1930 from the hills of western North Carolina. The family worked for his Uncle Don Byrd's farm as migrant farm labor. They lived in tenant houses on the farm grounds. Two more brothers were born in Pennsylvania, thus increasing the farm labor.
He met his future wife while providing the transportation for a double date with his friend Charlie Hanck. She took one look at him and decided that this is the man she wanted to spend the rest of her life with. She asked her friend Edie Lemon to switch partners, which she did reluctantly. A courtship ensued and about a year later they eloped to get married in Elkton, Maryland. She left school in her senior year and they moved to a small rental house without running water or indoor plumbing in Mineral Springs. About a year later they had their first of three sons. For the next 59 years they were one, known as "Ike and Betty."
He was employed as a supervisor for Budd Co. of Eagle, (formerly Gindy Manufacturing) for 26 years until his retirement in 1971. After his retirement he worked for many years as a finisher of new houses with his good friend Harry Herring. He loved wood working and took great pride in his work.
He enjoyed gardening, cooking, fishing, woodworking, and hunting and was an avid Phillies and Eagles fan. For most of his adult life he enjoyed a friendly garden competition with his brother Ed Tipton. He so loved his garden that he lovingly maintained for over 50 years that two weeks prior to his death, he could be found in his favorite place, his vegetable garden checking on the progress of his tomato and corn plants. Each year it was a race that could have the first and biggest tomatoes.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by three sons, Ronald W. Tipton of East Brandywine, Isaac W. Tipton Jr., also of East Brandywine, and John L. Tipton and his wife Barbara of Greenville, S.C.; two brothers, Fieldon J. Tipton, Jr. of East Brandywine and Samuel Tipton of Downingtown, five grandchildren - Isaac W. Tipton, III of Glenmoore, PA, Dawn Armstrong of Downingtown, PA, Karen Tipton of Florida, Nancy Tipton of Greenville, SC, and Vicky Payne of Taylor, SC, and 9 great-grandchildren - Kandace Bradford and Chase Bradford of Downingtown, PA - Gabrielle Tipton of FL - and Ashliegh Payne, Lauren Payne, Megan Payne, Kyle Payne, and Michael Payne of SC.
His brothers that preceded him in death were John M. Tipton, Luther L. "Dude" Tipton, Raymond L. Tipton, J. Henry Tipton, Richard B. Tipton and Edward W. Tipton, Sr., and Bruce Tipton, all of PA.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Friday, Aug. 25, at the James J. Terry Funeral Home, 736 E. Lancaster Ave., Downingtown, PA.

Interment will be in Hopewell United Methodist Cemetery, East Brandywine.
