22nd United States Vice President, New York Governor, U.S. Congressman. Educated at Shoreham Academy, he taught school in Boscawen, New Hampshire, (1840-41). In 1878, he was appointed honorary commissioner to the Paris Exhibition by President Rutherford Hayes. In 1879, he was elected as a Republican to the Forty-sixth and Forty-seventh Congresses and served until his resignation, when appointed the U.S. Minister to France, serving (1881-85). He was elected Vice President of the United States on the Republican ticket with Benjamin Harrison and served from 1889 to 1893. After his term, he served as the 31st Governor of New York from 1895 to 1896, and later was an investor in real estate until his death at age 96.
