Johnnie Marietta

Johnnie Marietta, 87, of 2305 W. Fourth, died Monday, July 31, 2000, at Mt. Carmel Medical Center in Pittsburg.

He was born in May of 1913, in Cherokee, to Antone and Elizabeth Nevosa Marietta.

He was a lifetime resident of the area, attending schools in Cherokee.

Mr. Marietta was a veteran of World War II serving in the U.S. Navy.

He married Helen Callaway. She survives of the home.

Mr. Marietta worked as a coal miner, he also had worked for Spencer Chemical. He was self-employed and owned and operated Lone Star General Store and Army Surplus Store; he built the first Motel and Mobil Home Park in the Pittsburg area. He was instrumental in starting the company known as Jake's Fireworks.

He was a member of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church.

He was also a member of Circus Fans of America, Circus Historical Society, Heart of the Heartland's Railroad Club and the Frontenac American Legion Post No. 43.

Mr. Marietta owned a miniature circus, which was used by Cecil B. DeMille to film the movie "The Greatest Show on Earth".

Additional survivors include two sons, John Marietta Jr. and Michael (Jake) Marietta, both of Pittsburg; a daughter, Juanita McDermed of Gallup, N.M.; a sister, Maggie Nicholson of Pittsburg; five grandsons; one granddaughter; and one great-granddaughter.

Mass of Christian burial will be 10 a.m. Thursday, at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Pittsburg, with Fr. Thomas Stroot as celebrant. The eulogy will be provided by Paul Ingrassia. The lector will be Ben Turner.

Burial will follow in the Hosey Hill Cemetery in Weir.

The parish rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. Wednesday, at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church.

The family will receive friends following the rosary until 8 p.m. Friends may call at the funeral home after noon Wednesday.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Bath-Naylor Funeral Home, 522 S. Broadway.
