John fought in the Civil War for the Confederate side along with his brothers William and Michael in the 25th. Regiment, Viginia Infantry. John and his brother William moved to Maquoketa, Jackson, Iowa after the war and were farmers.

Botkin---John Addison Botkin was born in Pendleton, county, West Virginia April 7, 1838 and was united in marriage to Miss Mahulda Eye on January 25, 1866. They came to Iowa in the fall of 1867 and located south of Maquoketa. In 1880, he moved to the Bolton farm which he bought and where he resided until his death, Thursday, Mar 27, 1913, aged 74 years, 11 months and 20 days. He was ready to come to town and was waiting until his son got the team ready. He was stricken while on a chair. Help was summoned but to no avail. He soon passed away without a struggle. His wife died March 22, 1904, since that time made his home with his son on the home farm. He was the happy father of four children, Mrs. Clara Grant, Augustus and Arthur of Maquoketa, and Mrs. Jennie King of New Jersey. He was an honest, hard working man and planned and made a comfortable home for his family. As a thresher and milk and cream hauler, he served his community well, always on the job. He was an excellent neighbor, always ready to answer the call of help in time of trouble and need. A genial, jovial friend typical of the southern temperament. He will certainly be greatly missed in the community in which he lived so many years. Besides the sorrowing family, three brothers, Michael, Nicholas and Benjamin and one sister, Mrs. Martha Simmons, all in the East, survive to mourn his loss.
