US Congressman. He was a member of the North Carolina State House of Commons, 1790 to 1792 and served in the State Senate, 1794 to 1796. In 1799, he was elected as a Republican to the Sixth Congress and to the seven succeeding Congresses, serving until 1815. He was elected as a Republican to the Nineteenth and Twentieth Congresses and reelected as a Jacksonian to the Twenty-first Congress, serving 1825 to 1831. Not a candidate for reelection, he engaged in agricultural pursuits on his plantation "Butterwood" until his death.
