Mary "met" her future husband, John Henry Nelson, when a relative of hers told her that they knew a nice man she should meet. John was living in the state of Washington at that time. The two exchanged letters and eventually were wed in Montesano, Washington on June 4, 1926. They returned to Kansas to live in Peck in a house owned by Mary's aunt and uncle, Rose Bishop Duval and Bertram Clarence Duval. In exchange, John and Mary cared for Mary's grandmother Amanda King Bishop.
John and Mary raised four children in Peck, two sons and two daughters. They later moved to Haysville. Their marriage lasted for 48 years, ended by his death in 1974.
