Bertha was the daughter of Reuben and Elizabeth Davis Baxter. She married Percy "Fuzzer" Essex, the well-known baseball player on February 14, 1921. She died at Bartonville after the illness of seven months. Her funeral was held at the Galesburg Methodist Episcopal Church. Surviving at her death were her parents and siblings of Mrs. Blanche Slater, Mrs. Elizabeth Cole, Mrs. Anna Trayner, Edward, Reuben Jr. and Merle Baxter.
