Rachel Demaree Ryker VanCleave married John VanCleave as her 2d husband John VanCleave in 1783, after her first husband Gerardus Ryker and his first wife Mary Shepherd were killed during the "Long Run Massacre" in Shelby Co. Kentucky in 1781. John and Rachel VanCleave had two sons, Peter and David.

Samuel changed the spelling of his surname from Demarest to the same French pronounced Demaree. He migrated with his family to Pennsylvania (where Rachel was born) and then to Kentucky. Land litigation documents filed after his death lists his daughter Rachel and husband John Van Cleave.
