Mrs. Margery Smullin, one of the oldest and most highly esteemed residents of the county, passed peacefully to rest at 7:00 o'clock Sunday morning, March 29th, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. E.B. Arthur, with whom she had made her home for several years. Death was caused by gangrene, resulting from diabetes with which she had been a sufferer for many years. The funeral services were held from the home at 2:30 o'clock Monday afternoon, conducted by the Rev. Collins of the M.E. church and assisted by the Rev. Mason of the Presbyterian church, burial in Linwood cemetery.
The pall bearers were the following nephews of the deceased: A.E. Frampton, John Frampton, H.E. Fry, Foster Boggs, W.M. Wheelock, and Ralph Houghton.
Margery Harris Boggs was born in Center County, Pa., April 2, 1827 and lacked but a few days of eighty one years at the time of her death. She early united with the Methodist church and remained a faithful member until her death and an active worker in the cause of religion as long as her health would permit. Dec. 12, 1844 she was married to John M Smullin at Callensburg, Pa. In 1856 they came to LaSalle county, Ill., and in 1866 to Boone county, Ia., settled on a farm two and a half miles southeast of Boone, where they made their home until 1877 when they removed to Boone, Mr. Smullin died April 25, 1897 and since then she has made her home with her daughter, Mrs. E.B. Arthur. To Mr. and Mrs. Smullin were born six children, two of whom, Harry and John, died in childhood.
The surviving are Mrs. Orville Houghton of Porterville, California, Leonidas L. Smullin of Clinton, Iowa, James Harris Smullin of Chicago and Mrs. E.B. Arthur of Boone. She is also survived by six brothers and sisters, Mrs. Henry Fry of Boone, Foster, John W. and James H. Boggs of Long Beach, California and Mrs. Lida Houghton of Porterville, California; eleven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren and an innumerable host of admiring friends.
